First-hand experience of war is more likely to make one truly hate war. But McCain's not a pacificist, so we still need to know what he thinks justifies war. For example, The Bush Doctrine that allows preemptive war is designed to prevent larger wars or attacks, so does a war-hater like McCain support it? Being against war doesn't tell us enough.
